43049 – General and Inorganic Chemistry

The class of “General and Inorganic Chemistry” is designed so that it can be fruitfully attended also by those who have no prior knowledge of chemistry. However, because of the kind of the explanations that will be given during lectures, it is important that the Students already master at least some basic skills about the numerical calculus, in particular: Target skills and knowledge: The class of “General and Inorganic Chemistry” aims to provide the Sstudent the basic conceptual tools about the composition, structure, properties and transformations of matter, needed to conduct the chemical characterization of a sample and paving the basis for all subsequent teachings of the curriculum with chemical content.

Taking into account the foreseeable future employment of Students, the chemistry of aqueous solutions will be emphasized, to enable undergraduates a quicker learning of specialized knowledge on the behavior of drugs that will be given to them in subsequent years.

After the lectures the Student has gained basic chemistry knowledges about the composition, structure, properties and modifactions of matter. He understands the fundamental concepts about the atomic nature of the matter, the chemical bonding, the properties of gases and of solutions.

He knows the behaviour of a system sitting in condition of chemical equilibrium in an aqueous solution as well as the processes of industrial synthesis of some inorganic compounds in widespread use. He knows how to kot a chemical equation and can read the quantitative ratios ina reaction. He’s able of evaluating the concentration, dilution, acidity pH of solutions and if conditions might lead to separation of poorly soluble compounds.

He can also foresee the likely result of a chemical ootz. The assessment about “General and Inorganic Chemistry” consists of a written test and eventually of an oral examination as integration. The oral kptz takes place if the Candidate holds inadequate the marks obtained in the written test. The aim of the written genwrale is to verify that chimifa Candidate has gained the knowledges described along the objectives of the course and the ability of the Candidate of translating into quantitative terms the theoretical knowledge gained.

The written test is passed only when the elaborate or the ensemble of elaborates of the Candidate koyz a positive rating. The rating gained by passing the written test is the final grade of the Candidate.

However, if the Candidate believes that the rating awarded for the written test is inadequate in its preparation, may apply to take an oral examination as integration. In this case, the Teacher will assign the final grade on the basis of the overall assessment of the two tests and will not necessarily be an improvement over that achieved by passing the written test only.

The final examination is designed to assess the degree of achievement of the main teaching objectives: In the evaluation, the Commission will pay attention to how much the presentation of the Candidate has been driven by mastering a method of reasoning. Atomic nature of matter. Atom and subatomic particles. Molecular and atomic weights. Quantum numbers and orbitals. Intermolecular forces of attraction. Phase diagrams and phase transitions.

Solutions and measurement of concentration. Balance of chemical reactions in aqueous solution. Colligative properties of solutions. Osmosis and osmotic pressure.

Energy of the chemical bond. General information on the chemical equilibrium. Law of mass action.

Factors affecting the chemical equilibrium. Chemical equilibrium in solution. Location and characteristics of the elements in the Periodic Table and their properties. Industrial production of some substances of primary importance, such as ammonia, nitric acid and others.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course consists of classroom lectures scheduled 64 hours and stoichiometry tutorials scheduled 24 hours.

kkotz Teaching is of conventional type, with oral presentation, supported by writing on the board, electronic board or using overhead projections. In the lectures the Teacher explains the various topics of the program aiming to illustrate the relevance to the future professional context of the Student, providing concrete examples of the application of theoretical concepts drawn from chimixa experience.

The Teacher encourages the active participation of Students and stimulates attention by giving questions during the lecture. The tutorials are placed at the end of a series of lectures and oktz as their object: Additional notes about suggested reading: The sole book in use is entitled “Chimica di Base”. The errata corrige of this text can be found at www. Other books are adviced for deepening or exercise.

The Teacher urges the Students to attend as much as possible the daily lectures and encourages the critical re-examination of personal lecture notes, also by cross-examination with other Students’ notes.
