Jack recognizes a short-distance runner when he sees one, and Merry fits the bill. Merry is in way over her head. I loved the writing. She can make the most unlikely situations seem plausible, and the most eccentric characters seem real and likeable.

For all of Merry’s inexperience as a parent, she is a tigress when it comes to protecting Charlie’s rights to grieve in her own way. They added a surprising amount of depth and quite a bit of meat to a story that could have stuck with a more superficial but humorous romance and still been entertaining.
